Those who choose the International Studies and English Communications Major as their field of study will engage in and utilize learning based on the Humanities—a distinctive element of the College of Letters — from and related to area studies, intercultural understanding, multicultural and multilingual coexistence, to be cultured in, and to acquire, an international education.
Through four years of continual English training, students are helped to achieve and acquire advanced English proficiency. This will allow them to communicate with people around the world and become active internationally as global citizens. Further, students can gain basic competency in order to enter graduate school within the academic fields of Language, Culture, and Area Studies in English-speaking Countries, English Studies, English Pedagogy, Literature, and Cultural Studies.
Four Features of International Studies and English Communications Major
- 01. SEC has an international-oriented curriculum that helps students understand not only the cultures of English-speaking countries but also of the modern world.
- 02. Students acquire English proficiency by engaging in four years of English training and by studying subjects taught in English. Students are also encouraged to utilize intensive short-term studies at the University of Hawai‘i.
- 03. Students engage in advanced learning with an understanding of global language education and linguistic situations relating to the pedagogy of scholastic English.
- 04. Learning is based on cross-disciplinary area study, which includes courses on intercultural understanding as well as those relating to multicultural and multilingual coexistence.
